How the best buffalo slots are ranked

Which buffalo slot machine is the best comes down to two games: the Aristocrat original, which every later Buffalo copies, and Buffalo King Megaways, which has the higher top RTP build and the wider US reach. The ranking of the best buffalo slots on this page orders them, and the eight games behind them, with four tests applied to every title in the same sequence.

The first test is the bonus round, since that is where buffalo games make or lose their money. A free games feature earns credit for doing something the base game cannot: multipliers that build or a choice the player makes. The second is availability at licensed casinos in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. A game players in those four states cannot open legally ranks below an equal one they can.

The third test is the quality of the data. A ranked position needs a published RTP from the provider or a regulated casino page, a documented feature set and a max win with a source. Games resting on reviewer figures alone, or with conflicting specs, lose ground. The fourth is the standard RTP and the max win, read together, because a 96.5% game with a 300x ceiling plays very differently from a 94% game with a 13,000x ceiling.

Influence counts only as a tiebreak. The original sits at number two, ahead of games with better numbers, because it passes the availability and data tests cleanly and its free games are the template the whole family copies.

What RTP decides and what it does not

RTP is the most quoted number on a slot and the least stable one. Pragmatic Play’s Buffalo King runs at 96.06% on the provider page, but reviewers list 95.53% and 94.55% versions too, and the casino chooses which one goes live. The ranking always uses the provider’s standard RTP and notes the others, so none of the best buffalo slots here is ranked on a figure only one casino offers.

A spread of one or two points in RTP matters less over a single session than the volatility of the bonus. Still, between two games with similar features, the higher standard RTP wins the place. That rule separates Buffalo Gold Revolution (95.05%) from games that would otherwise sit close to it, and it is part of why the RTP-light Aristocrat titles need something else, usually US availability, to climb.

Compared on standard RTP alone, the best buffalo slots would line up differently. Buffalo King Megaways would still lead at 96.52%, followed by Almighty Buffalo Megaways and Buffalo Rising Megaways at 96.5% each, Buffalo King at 96.06% and Buffalo Blitz at 95.96%. The original would fall to eighth at 94.72%, and Buffalo Chief would be last at 94.03%. An RTP-only answer to which buffalo slot machine is the best is easy to build and misleading to use, since it ignores whether the game is even legal to play in your state.

The top ten, ranked and compared

1. Buffalo King Megaways

Pragmatic Play’s 2021 sequel scores on all four tests, and that makes it the best buffalo slot machine for most players right now. It runs six reels of two to seven symbols with a horizontal top reel, for up to 200,704 ways, and tumbles winning symbols away. Four, five or six scatters award 12, 17 or 22 free spins plus 5x, 20x or 100x the bet, and three more scatters in the round add five spins with no retrigger limit. In free spins, wilds carry x2, x3 or x5, and those values add up across a tumble sequence.

The standard RTP is 96.52%, with a 94.51% version listed by reviewers and a reported 94.10% build at Hard Rock Bet. The max win is 5,000x. It is confirmed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan at several licensed casinos. The Buffalo King Megaways review goes through the Ante Bet and the 100x feature buy.

2. Buffalo

Aristocrat’s 2008 original is the reason the genre exists. The 5x4, 1,024-ways grid, the sunset wild and the free games with 2x and 3x wilds that multiply together are all here, unchanged. Its weak spots are numeric: the online RTP is 94.72% at OLG and on BetMGM’s game page (94.85% at reviewers), and the max win is 300x at BetMGM and DraftKings, against a 93,750x figure in a BetMGM blog that no game page repeats.

It still ranks second. Online, BetMGM in New Jersey launched it on September 5, 2023, the data comes from two regulated casino pages, and every Aristocrat sequel on this list is a variation on it. The Buffalo review covers both the online version and the floor cabinet.

3. Almighty Buffalo Megaways

White Hat Studios’ 2022 game is, by its rules sheet, Blueprint’s Buffalo Rising Megaways in a US edition. The standard RTP is 96.5%, or 97.01% with the Buffalo bet. Four scatters open a choice: 15 spins at x1, 10 at x5, 5 at x10 or a mystery pick, and the win multiplier then rises by one after every cascade. White Hat rates its volatility 5 of 5.

It is confirmed in Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The one gap is the max win, which sources give as 10,000x, 50,000x or “$250K”, so no figure is shown. The King Megaways vs Almighty Buffalo Megaways comparison sets the two top Megaways games against each other.

4. Buffalo King

The 2019 original from Pragmatic Play has the biggest ceiling on the list: 93,750x, a theoretical figure quoted by reviewers. Its 6x4 grid gives 4,096 ways, and three to six bonus symbols award 8, 15, 25 or 100 free spins, where wilds carry x2, x3 or x5 and multiply each other in a win (up to x3,125 per Bigwinboard). The standard RTP is 96.06%.

What keeps it at fourth is availability: no regulated US casino page has been found for it. Outside the US, its far higher ceiling makes it the pick over its Megaways sequel for players chasing one large hit. The Buffalo King vs Buffalo King Megaways comparison covers the trade-off.

5. Buffalo Gold Max Power

Aristocrat Interactive launched this one in New Jersey in December 2024, and it is now confirmed in all four states. The Max Power reels show two to six symbols each, up to 46,656 ways, and six-of-a-kind wins exist. The free games bring back the Gold Buffalo collection: heads gathered during the round turn other symbols into buffalo, and six scatters award up to 25 free games. The max win is 12,995x.

The RTP is the catch: 94.11% at OLG and BetMGM, with a 95.8% version at PlayAlberta. Volatility is disputed too, since FanDuel calls it low and OLG and BetMGM call it high.

6. Thundering Buffalo

High 5 Games’ title (2011 per the studio, though reviewers give 2015 or 2018) plays on a 3-4-5-4-3 grid with 720 ways that pay both ways according to BetMGM. Stacked wilds can cover whole reels, and the free spins start at eight when the free spins symbol lands on all five reels, with retriggers building up to 240.

BetMGM lists it at 94.9% RTP in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia. The max win is 1,000x by the primary figure, with 1,500x and 1,904x quoted elsewhere. It ranks above games with better RTPs because the 240-spin ceiling makes its bonus unusually long, and because four-state availability is rare.

7. Buffalo Blitz

Playtech’s 2016 game uses the same 6x4, 4,096-ways format as Buffalo King, three years earlier. Stacked buffalo symbols fill reels in the base game, a diamond wild appears on reels two to six, and in free spins that wild applies x2, x3 or x5 to the win. Three to six scatters award 8, 15, 25 or 100 spins.

There is no Playtech spec sheet, so the RTP rests on reviewers: 95.96% at Slotcatalog and American Casino Guide, 96.49% at Racing Post. No max win is published. In the US only FanDuel’s Michigan jackpot edition is confirmed, which caps its place at seventh.

8. Buffalo Rising Megaways

Blueprint’s 2018 game is the source of Almighty Buffalo Megaways, with the same 117,649 ways, the same spin choice and the same unlimited multiplier that climbs after every cascade. It adds a published 10,000x max win, and Blueprint lists a 97.01% version with the Bison Bet as well as 93% and 92.02% builds.

It sits five places below its US twin for one reason: no US jurisdiction appears on Blueprint’s list. Blueprint’s own page now calls it “Bison Rising MEGAWAYS”. The Buffalo King Megaways vs Buffalo Rising Megaways comparison shows how the two Megaways designs differ.

9. Buffalo Chief

Aristocrat’s 2020 sequel has the most unusual grid of the family: 4-6-6-6-4 for 3,456 ways, expanding to 4-10-10-10-4 and up to 16,000 ways in the Mystery Gigantic Stampede, which guarantees a five-of-a-kind buffalo. Collecting supercoins spins a wheel that can add up to 250 extra buffalo to the reels for the free games.

It is confirmed in all four states. The ranking holds it back on numbers: OLG lists 94.03% (BetMGM says 95%), and the 4,000x max win is BetMGM’s figure alone.

10. Buffalo Gold Revolution

The MarsX launch title from 2019 extends Buffalo Gold with a wheel bonus that can award progressive jackpots, credit prizes, Gold Buffalo or free games. Every wild carries a multiplier, and free games always start with a spin of the wheel. The online RTP is 95.05% at OLG and PlayAlberta and the max win is 1,000x, a figure that excludes the progressives.

It is confirmed in New Jersey. Layout reports conflict (5x4 at OLG, 6x4 at Caesars), which counts against it under the data test. The Buffalo Gold vs Buffalo Gold Revolution comparison explains what the wheel changes.

Choosing from the best buffalo slots

For most players in a regulated state, the best buffalo slot machine is Buffalo King Megaways. Beyond the best buffalo slots ranked here, the full catalog covers twenty more titles, including the floor-only cabinets, and any two of them can be compared side by side in the compare tool.

Buffalo King’s 93,750x top figure remains the largest on this list, and it is also the one game in the top four with no confirmed US casino.

Ranking questions

Is the original Aristocrat Buffalo still worth playing?

For the classic feel, yes. Its 94.72% RTP and 300x max win (BetMGM, DraftKings) are modest next to newer games, but the 8, 15 or 20 free games with multiplying 2x and 3x wilds are the design every other Aristocrat sequel builds on. Online it is confirmed only in New Jersey, where BetMGM launched it in September 2023.

Which buffalo slot has the biggest max win?

Among the ten ranked games, Buffalo King lists the highest figure at 93,750x the stake, a theoretical value quoted by reviewers; Pragmatic Play's page does not print it. Buffalo Gold Max Power's 12,995x and Buffalo Rising Megaways' 10,000x follow. Almighty Buffalo Megaways has no single published max win, because sources give 10,000x, 50,000x or a $250K cap.

Why is Buffalo Rising Megaways ranked below Almighty Buffalo Megaways if they share the same rules?

Because only one of them is confirmed at US casinos. The two games share a rules sheet, RTP (96.5%, or 97.01% with the buy bet) and bet range, but Almighty Buffalo Megaways is the edition White Hat Studios distributes in Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Buffalo Rising Megaways does not appear on Blueprint's US jurisdiction list.

Do the rankings change?

They can. A ranking moves when the underlying data moves: a game confirmed in a new state, a provider publishing a figure that was missing, or a casino switching to a different RTP version. The order shown reflects the provider and regulated-operator data checked on October 1, 2026.
