Verdict: Retriggers can stretch Thundering Buffalo's free spins to 240, and its 720 ways pay in both directions on a 3-4-5-4-3 grid. The 94.9% RTP is on the low side, so the format, not the return, is the reason to play it.
A diamond of reels instead of a square
Most buffalo slots copy the flat grid Aristocrat made famous. Thundering Buffalo does something else. High 5 Games built it on five reels of unequal height: three symbols on the outer reels, four on reels two and four, and five on the centre reel. Multiply those heights (3 × 4 × 5 × 4 × 3) and you arrive at the 720 ways the game is sold on.
The shape changes how a spin reads. The tall middle reel does most of the connecting, while a win that has to reach the far edge depends on a reel that only shows three positions. BetMGM’s game description adds a second detail: ways pay left to right and right to left. A run of matching symbols that starts on reel five and works inward counts as well, so each spin is read in two directions on the same grid.
High 5 dates the game to 2011. That places it three years after Aristocrat’s Buffalo, and the comparison is hard to avoid, since Aristocrat’s game runs 1,024 ways on a 5x4 rectangle and this one runs fewer ways on a shaped grid. The title is listed as both a casino-floor game and an online slot. One industry directory credits the floor version to IGT or Bally distribution; no primary page confirms it, so that question stays open.
What the stacked wilds do
High 5’s own page sums up the feature set in three words: “Stacked Wilds, Ways.” It is an honest description. The base game has no pick bonus, no wheel and no collection mechanic, and almost everything interesting happens when the wilds turn up in columns.
According to BetMGM, those stacks can cover a whole reel. On the centre reel that means five wilds at once. Because every way passes through the middle, a fully wild centre column lets any symbol that lands on the first two reels carry on through to reel four, and with two-way pays the same is true from the right-hand side. Two or three stacked reels in one spin is where the base game produces its better results. Single scattered wilds on the short outer reels matter far less.
Scatter pays are part of the feature list too, which gives the occasional small return on spins where nothing else lines up.
BetMGM rates the game as high volatility. High 5 publishes no volatility figure of its own, so that label is the operator’s.
Free spins: eight to start, 240 at most
The trigger is strict. The free-spins symbol has to land on all five reels in the same spin, including the two outer reels that only show three positions each. Three scatters anywhere, the trigger most buffalo games use, is not enough here. No source shows a feature buy either, so landing that five-reel combination is the only way into the round, and long stretches of base-game spins between features are normal for a game built this way.
The opening award is modest at 8 free spins. The draw is what happens next: further triggers during the round add more games, and both BetMGM and VegasSlotsOnline describe a ceiling of 240 free spins in a single feature, thirty times the opening award. No published source mentions a multiplier inside the round. The value of the feature therefore rests on two things, the stacked wilds and how long the chain runs, and a round that ends after the first eight games can be quite flat.
The figures, and where sources disagree
The RTP is 94.9%, the number BetMGM’s US game information gives; review sites quote 94.91% for the same build. That sits slightly above the 94.72% of the online original Buffalo and well below Pragmatic Play’s Buffalo King at 96.06%. Players who sort games by return will find better numbers elsewhere on the best buffalo slots list.
Release year
High 5 gives 2011, and this page shows that year. VegasSlotsOnline says 2015 and slotcatalog lists August 2018. The later dates most likely record when online aggregators added the game, not when it was made.
Maximum win
Three figures circulate. BetMGM’s review text says 1,000x, while the quick-facts box on the same page says 1,500x, and slotcatalog quotes 1,904x. VegasSlotsOnline agrees with 1,000x. This page shows 1,000x, the figure tied to five of the top symbol, and treats the higher numbers as unconfirmed.
A BetMGM list that describes a different game
BetMGM’s top-ten buffalo blog lists Thundering Buffalo with 243 ways, a 96.13% RTP and a 5,643x top win. None of that fits a 720-ways game. Both later games in the family use 243 ways, so the entry may describe one of the sequels or another High 5 build. The provider’s own layout is the one this page follows.
The rest of the High 5 family
Thundering Buffalo was the first of three. Thundering Buffalo: Golden Stampede followed in 2017 with 243 ways, and Thundering Buffalo Jackpot Dash arrived in 2020 on a 5x3 grid with five collection meters paying fixed jackpots. The two games share a name and a theme but play very differently, and the Thundering Buffalo vs Jackpot Dash comparison sets them side by side. The rest of the studio’s buffalo output is listed on the High 5 Games provider page.
Real-money play in the US
Thundering Buffalo is one of the few buffalo slots with confirmed regulated availability in all four online casino states. BetMGM carries it in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia, for players 21 and over; the real-money hub lists the licensed brands state by state. FanDuel is a different story: its lobby has Golden Stampede, the 2017 sequel, but not the original.
Stakes depend on the operator. BetMGM’s review gives a maximum of 200 per spin, while slotcatalog lists $0.50 to $50, so the bet panel inside the game is the only range worth trusting.
