2008 to 2015: one game, then three
The family starts with a single cabinet. Buffalo appeared in 2008 with a 5x4 grid, 1,024 ways, a sunset wild and the 8, 15 or 20 free games with multiplying 2x and 3x wilds that later titles keep, though the Max Power edition adds a six-scatter award of up to 25 games. The year is firm because Aristocrat itself celebrated the tenth anniversary in 2018.
The first sequels are harder to date. Buffalo Gold, the game that introduced collecting Gold Buffalo heads during free games, is placed in about 2013, and that date rests on secondary sources alone. Buffalo Stampede arrived in the same window, late 2013 or early 2014: Aristocrat’s February 2014 results announcement already named it as a performing game, and it ranked as the most anticipated title in a 2014 slot manager survey. Both dates here are approximate.
Buffalo Deluxe is the gap in the record. Its year is not verified at all. It was on the market by September 2014, when it appeared in a lottery licensing deal, and it forms part of the Wonder 4 Jackpots cabinet. With no year to anchor it, it stays out of the dated releases on this page.
Then a firm date again. Buffalo Grand premiered at Station Casinos on September 28, 2015, on the larger Arc double cabinet, with reels that expand during play and a wheel that awards jackpots or a multiplier.
2018 to 2022: the cabinet era
Three years passed before the next dated release, and when it came it was a celebration. Buffalo Diamond, the tenth anniversary edition, launched on the flame55 cabinet at G2E in October 2018, with a diamond-shaped 4-5-6-5-4 reel set, 2,400 ways and a free games multiplier that persists through the round.
From there, new Buffalo titles doubled as launch games for new Aristocrat hardware. Buffalo Gold Revolution was the launch title of the MarsX cabinet, first at Graton in August 2019 and then at G2E that year. Buffalo Chief followed, presented as “the newest evolution” of the brand at the opening of a Buffalo Bar in February 2020; one secondary source dates it to 2019, but the premiere press release points to 2020. Buffalo Link came in 2021 on MarsX Portrait, bringing hold-and-spin jackpots to the family. Its trigger, eight or more buffalo on one spin, turned the family’s signature symbol into the bonus key. Buffalo Ascension launched the Neptune Single cabinet at NIGA in 2022. Its middle reels grow from four to seven rows and stay grown between spins, for up to 5,488 ways.
Buffalo Cash belongs in this stretch too, with a caveat. It was shown at G2E 2021 as the higher-denomination Buffalo Link, but its floor rollout may have come in 2022, so 2021 is the showing, not necessarily the release.
2023 and 2024: the move online
2023 is the busiest year in this timeline. Buffalo Triple Power debuted at IGA in March. It combines three free games features, Buffalo Rising, Buffalo Gold and Buffalo Bucks, which can trigger together, and it later led to Buffalo Quad Power and Buffalo Triple Boost. In October, Buffalo Ultimate Stampede was shown at G2E, though one secondary source dates it to 2024, so its year is approximate as well.
Between those two, on September 5, 2023, the original went online for the first time. BetMGM in New Jersey launched it as the first online casino in the world to carry Buffalo, in a version built by Anaxi. After fifteen years on the floor, the game that started the genre finally competed with the online buffalo slots that had grown up around it.
The online catalog filled in quickly. On December 13, 2024, Buffalo Gold Max Power launched in New Jersey, and Aristocrat Interactive counted it as its fifth online Buffalo title, after Buffalo, Buffalo Gold Collection, Buffalo Chief and Buffalo Gold Revolution. The year shown for Max Power on this site is that online launch; the year of the land Max Power cabinet is not verified.
2026: the Stampede line continues
The Stampede branch has proved the most durable. Buffalo Stampede led to Ultimate Stampede, then Buffalo Mega Stampede, and in August 2026 the launch of Buffalo Mega Stampede Grand was reported. It is the most recent entry in the timeline, eighteen years after the 2008 original, and its family still shares that game’s free games round.
For the differences between the first two entries, the Buffalo vs Buffalo Gold comparison sets them side by side.
Questions
When did the Aristocrat Buffalo slot come out?
In 2008, as a land-based cabinet. Aristocrat marked the game's tenth anniversary at G2E in October 2018 with Buffalo Diamond, which confirms the year. The original stayed floor-only until September 5, 2023, when BetMGM in New Jersey launched the first online version, built by Aristocrat's online unit Anaxi.
Which Buffalo release dates are uncertain?
Buffalo Gold is dated to about 2013 by secondary sources only. Buffalo Stampede appeared in late 2013 or early 2014. Buffalo Deluxe has no verified year, though it was on the market by September 2014. Buffalo Cash was shown at G2E 2021 and may have reached floors in 2022, and Buffalo Ultimate Stampede was shown in 2023 with one source dating it 2024.
What was the first online Aristocrat Buffalo game?
The original Buffalo, launched at BetMGM in New Jersey on September 5, 2023. Aristocrat Interactive later described Buffalo Gold Max Power, launched in New Jersey in December 2024, as its fifth online Buffalo title after Buffalo, Buffalo Gold Collection, Buffalo Chief and Buffalo Gold Revolution.
Does the timeline include buffalo slots from other studios?
No. It follows the Aristocrat Buffalo family only, because those games share one ancestor. Other studios' buffalo slots started separately: High 5 Games dates Thundering Buffalo to 2011, Playtech released Buffalo Blitz in 2016, Blueprint Gaming's Buffalo Rising Megaways came in 2018 and Pragmatic Play's Buffalo King in 2019.
