Buffalo Link Slot Machine: How the Hold & Spin and the Jackpots Work

Buffalo Link is what happened when Aristocrat combined its best-known theme with the Hold & Spin round from Lightning Link and Dragon Link. It reached casino floors in 2021 on the MarsX Portrait cabinet.

Verdict: Buffalo Link swaps the classic free games for a respin round with its jackpots in plain view, and the meter shows when a feature is getting close.

Eight Buffalo and three respins

The trigger on Buffalo Link is simple to read. Land eight or more Buffalo symbols and the Hold & Spin begins. The Buffalo lock in place and the round starts with three respins. Each new Buffalo that lands sticks and resets the count back to three. The round ends when the respins run out, and if every one of the 20 positions on the 5x4 grid holds a Buffalo, the Grand jackpot pays.

Inside the round, Buffalo can carry cash-on-reel awards, and the jackpot tiers are the top prizes on offer. Multipliers can also land on the fifth reel. Aristocrat does not publish the multiplier values for the fifth reel or the full list of cash amounts, so this page does not quote them.

Anyone who has played Lightning Link or Dragon Link will recognize the structure immediately. Buffalo Link is that Hold & Spin engine with the Buffalo theme painted on top, and Aristocrat built the series around it from there. Buffalo Cash followed as the higher-denomination version, and Lightning Buffalo Link arrived in 2023 as a separate game. For other titles that use a respin round, the hold and win hub lists them.

The meter above the reels

The second feature on Buffalo Link is the one regulars talk about most. The cabinet counts every Buffalo that lands, and the Buffalo Free Feature must be awarded before that meter reaches 1,800. It is a must-hit-by, the mechanism many mystery progressives use, applied here to a free-games round.

That changes how some players choose a machine. A Buffalo Link cabinet with its meter at 1,700 is closer to forcing the feature than one sitting at 200, and you can see the number before putting any money in. The feature can still land well before 1,800, and nothing about a high meter changes the odds of the base game, but the meter does tell you how close the cabinet is to its forced award.

The free games themselves are the classic Buffalo round. They award 8, 15 or 20 games, wilds carry 2x or 3x multipliers, and the feature retriggers, as described by Aristocrat and Wizard of Odds. It plays exactly as the original Buffalo does, which is the point: Buffalo Link offers two bonuses, the respins and the familiar free games, on one cabinet.

Grid, ways and the base game

Buffalo Link uses a 5x4 grid with ways to win paid left to right, according to Wizard of Odds. On a 5x4 grid that means 1,024 ways, the same count the original uses. Aristocrat does not state the exact ways figure itself, so treat 1,024 as the result of the layout and not as a number Aristocrat has printed.

Base-game spins feel familiar. The wilds and Buffalo symbols behave as they do in the older games, and most of the excitement comes from how many Buffalo land at once, because every Buffalo counts toward both the Hold & Spin trigger and the 1,800 meter.

Jackpots and one surveyed configuration

The jackpot ladder has four tiers. The Grand and Major are progressive, the Minor and Mini fixed. Values are set by the casino, so there is no single published amount. One cabinet surveyed by Wizard of Odds gives a sense of scale: a Grand capped at $20,000, a Major at $1,000, a Minor of 10,000 credits and a Mini of 2,000 credits. The same survey listed denominations from 1 to 5 cents and bets from 100 to 1,000 credits, or $1 to $50 a spin. That is a single machine’s setup. Aristocrat publishes no range, and another casino can set every one of those numbers differently.

The two games are close relatives, and on a busy floor they are easy to mix up. Aristocrat described Buffalo Cash at G2E 2021 as the higher-denomination version of Buffalo Link. Both use a Hold & Spin round, a Grand for 20 Buffalo and a must-hit-by meter that pays its feature before 1,800 Buffalo are collected. The differences are in the money and the wilds: Buffalo Cash runs at 5c and 10c, offers solo and linked progressive options, and places 2x and 3x wilds on reel 5 as well. Buffalo Link, at least on the Wizard of Odds cabinet, sits at 1 to 5 cents. For a player on a small budget, Link is usually the cheaper seat. The help screen settles any doubt, since 5c and 10c denominations with a Grand that can reach $200,000 mark the cabinet as Buffalo Cash.

RTP and volatility

Buffalo Link is a land cabinet, so the return to player is set by the casino from a range of math options Aristocrat offers, within the limits of the jurisdiction. Aristocrat publishes no single RTP, and this page shows none. The same applies to volatility: Aristocrat gives no rating for any Buffalo title, so any label you see elsewhere comes from a reviewer or a casino, not from the provider.

The game launched in 2021 on the MarsX Portrait cabinet, the portrait-screen version of the MarsX cabinet line that debuted with Buffalo Gold Revolution in 2019. That same year, Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City announced what it billed as the city’s largest collection of Buffalo Link machines. The Buffalo slots timeline puts it after Buffalo Chief and alongside Buffalo Cash.

It is a floor game only. No regulated US online casino lists Buffalo Link: FanDuel and BetMGM have no page for it, and Aristocrat Interactive left it out of its December 2024 list of online Buffalo titles. Players who want the respin structure online need a different game. The Buffalo Link vs Buffalo Gold comparison covers how the respin cabinet differs from the head-collecting one, and the Aristocrat hub lists the rest of the family.

Buffalo Link questions

How many Buffalo symbols trigger the Buffalo Link bonus?

Eight or more Buffalo symbols trigger the Hold & Spin. The Buffalo lock in place and the round starts with three respins. Each new Buffalo that lands resets the count to three. The round ends when the respins run out, and a full screen of 20 Buffalo awards the Grand jackpot.

What does the 1,800 meter on Buffalo Link mean?

Buffalo Link counts the Buffalo symbols that land and awards the Buffalo Free Feature before the meter reaches 1,800. It works as a must-hit-by: the feature has to arrive by that point. A meter that is already high when you sit down is closer to that point than one that has just reset, though the feature can still land at any value below it.

Can Buffalo Link be played online?

No regulated US online casino lists Buffalo Link, and it does not appear in the list of online Buffalo titles Aristocrat Interactive published in December 2024. It is a land cabinet found on US casino floors. Lightning Buffalo Link, released in 2023, is a separate title and not the same game.

How big are the Buffalo Link jackpots?

The casino configures them. One cabinet surveyed by Wizard of Odds had a Grand of up to $20,000, a Major of up to $1,000, a Minor of 10,000 credits and a Mini of 2,000 credits. The Grand and Major were progressive, the Minor and Mini fixed. Other machines can be set differently.
