Buffalo Stampede Slot Machine Guide: Reel Growth and Progressives

The sequel that started a line still running in 2026. Buffalo Stampede took the original's 1,024-ways grid, let the reels grow in free games and added a two-level progressive on the cabinet.

Verdict: Less is documented about Buffalo Stampede than about any other major Buffalo cabinet. What is known describes the original Buffalo with a progressive attached and a free-games round that can get bigger.

A sequel that became a series

Buffalo Stampede matters more for what came after it than for anything on its own reels. It was the second big branch off the 2008 Buffalo slot machine, arriving in the same window as Buffalo Gold, and the two went in opposite directions. Gold built its bonus around collecting heads. Stampede built its cabinet around a progressive and let the reels grow.

The name stuck. Aristocrat followed it with Buffalo Ultimate Stampede in 2023, then Buffalo Mega Stampede, and in August 2026 the launch of Buffalo Mega Stampede Grand was reported. A “stampede” also became a feature name inside other Buffalo games, such as the Gigantic Stampede on Buffalo Chief and the Stampede and Super Stampede on Buffalo Ascension. Those later features have their own rules, and none of them should be read back onto this cabinet.

What is documented, and what is not

Less is on record about Buffalo Stampede than about any other major cabinet in the family. Aristocrat has no current product page for it. The provider has not published a free-games trigger table, wild behavior or multiplier values for the game, and the research behind this page found no regulated source that does. So this page describes the three things that are documented and says plainly where the record stops.

The grid and the base game

The base game is a 4x5 Xtra Reel Power layout with 1,024 ways, which is the same shape as the original Buffalo: five reels, four rows, wins paid from the leftmost reel across adjacent reels with no lines to pick. Anyone who has played the original will be comfortable with it inside a minute.

What sets the cabinet apart is the feature set around that grid. The research describes a Stampede feature, free games in which the reels can grow, and the two-level progressive. How often the Stampede feature fires, and exactly what it does to the reels, has not been published by Aristocrat, and this page does not guess.

Free games where the reels grow

The free-games round on Buffalo Stampede is described by bestslotsusa as one in which the reels can grow. Growing reels are a sensible idea on an all-ways game: every extra row on a reel multiplies the number of ways, so a taller grid gives Buffalo more ways to connect. Aristocrat used that principle again and again later. Buffalo Grand grew reels two to four in 2015, Buffalo Ascension made the growth persistent in 2022, and Buffalo Chief expanded its middle reels to 10 rows during the Gigantic Stampede.

On Stampede itself, the size of the growth and the trigger for it are not documented. That is an honest gap. If you sit down at one of these cabinets, the help screens will show the free-games rules the casino installed, and they are the only reliable reference.

The two-level progressive

The clearest documented feature is the jackpot. Buffalo Stampede runs a two-level progressive, and it is single-site, according to The Gaming Guide. Single-site means the meter grows from play on that casino’s own machines and is not linked across properties, unlike the wide-area progressive reported for Buffalo Diamond five years later. The casino sets the starting values and the increments, and no fixed amounts have been published.

The cabinet caught on with casino operators quickly. In the 2014 Slot Manager survey, operators ranked it among the most anticipated titles, and Aristocrat’s February 2014 results announcement already cited it among its performing games.

Stampede between Gold and Grand

Read in order, the three cabinets of 2013 to 2015 show Aristocrat trying out the ideas that the rest of the family would reuse. Buffalo Gold kept the reels fixed and put a goal inside free games. Buffalo Stampede kept the grid but added a progressive and reel growth. Buffalo Grand, premiered at Station Casinos in September 2015, took the growth further on a larger Arc double cabinet and put a bonus wheel in front of the free games, with a multiplier of 2x to 10x and four progressive levels reported by secondary sources.

Next to Grand, Stampede is the plainer machine: two progressive levels where Grand has four, and no wheel. Next to Gold, it is the one with a jackpot to watch. Players who mostly want the classic Buffalo base game with something extra on the meter tend to like it for exactly that reason, and players who want a bonus with a target to chase usually end up at Gold.

The Stampede name, meanwhile, moved on. By 2023, Ultimate Stampede had turned it into a hold-and-spin round with cash-on-reel prizes, a long way from the 2013 cabinet.

RTP, volatility and cost per spin

As a land cabinet, Buffalo Stampede has no single return to player. Each casino picks one from Aristocrat’s range of math options, within its jurisdiction’s limits, and the provider publishes no figure. Aristocrat also publishes no volatility rating for this or any other Buffalo title.

The cost of a spin depends on how the casino configures the machine. One build listed by The Gaming Guide runs at a 1-cent denomination with a minimum bet of 50 or 75 credits and a maximum of 375 or 750 credits. On that build, the minimum works out to 50 or 75 cents a spin and the maximum to $3.75 or $7.50. Other floors can run the game at a higher denomination, and the help screen will show which build is installed.

Floor only

Buffalo Stampede has no confirmed online release. FanDuel and BetMGM have no page for it, and Aristocrat Interactive did not include it in its December 2024 list of online Buffalo titles. It is a casino-floor game. The Buffalo Stampede vs Buffalo Grand comparison looks at how it differs from the 2015 sequel, and the Buffalo slots timeline places it in the family, filed under 2013 with a note that the launch ran into early 2014.

Buffalo Stampede questions

When did Buffalo Stampede come out?

The launch fell in late 2013 or early 2014. Aristocrat's results announcement of February 2014 already listed Buffalo Stampede among its performing games, and the 2014 Slot Manager survey of casino operators ranked it among the most anticipated titles. One secondary source dates it to 2013, and the timeline on this site uses that year.

Does Buffalo Stampede have a progressive jackpot?

Yes. The cabinet runs a two-level progressive, and it is single-site, so the jackpot grows from play on that casino's machines and is not linked across properties. The amounts depend on how the casino sets the game, and Aristocrat has published no fixed values for either level.

What is the RTP of Buffalo Stampede?

There is no single figure. Buffalo Stampede is a land cabinet, and each casino chooses its return from a range of math options within the limits of its jurisdiction. Aristocrat has no current product page for the game and publishes no RTP. Any precise percentage seen elsewhere does not come from the provider.

Is Buffalo Stampede available at online casinos?

No. No regulated US online casino lists Buffalo Stampede, and it was not among the online Buffalo titles Aristocrat Interactive listed in December 2024. It is a casino-floor game. Later titles in the Stampede line, such as Buffalo Ultimate Stampede, are also land cabinets.

How much does a spin on Buffalo Stampede cost?

The casino sets the denomination and bet levels. One configuration listed by The Gaming Guide is a 1-cent build with a minimum bet of 50 or 75 credits and a maximum of 375 or 750 credits. Other floors can run the game at different denominations, so the button deck on the machine is the only reliable guide.
